Up until this season I had not witnessed a bear benefitting from the rare occasion (and a free meal) by a seal being stranded, trapped or even washed up on shore. Yet this season I have seen 3 out of 6 incidents.
It is making us all wonder - What is going on with the seal population?

This most recent trip was another one out at the lodge. We arrived in storm conditions therefore all the roads were closed due to gigantic snow drifts. The Hudson Bay raged and foamed and all animals hunkered down waiting for the winds to decrease. The days that followed were calm and tranquil and fairly mild. More and and more bears are showing up and already numerous family groups have also appeared. I saw my first Arctic fox of the season and he (or she) scavenged only metres away from our buggy giving us ample time to admire this well designed Arctic canine.
I am in Winnipeg with no camera to download any photos so in the next few days I will post a few images to put dramatic sights to my written words.
Currently while I wait to meet my next group, I am working on a presentation I am scheduled to give in Churchill on November 6th in the Polar Cinema. We tried to get Arnie (the Albatross) up here, but that 12 ft wingspan couldn't quite make it through the cargo doors. Oh well, he'll be there in spirit.
Already I have received emails from folks eager to help create a persentation in their community or club.
Once I have dates set I will post a calender so you too can see where one might work in your town.
Thanks again for your interest, stand by for more photos and a calender of presentation events.
