Who's watching who?

I have been in Churchill for nearly two weeks now and have spent at least a few hours on the water most days. The ice has melted away therefore the Churchill river has been accessible for us and our zodiacs. The tourists are gradually drifting in and keen to view the many birds that either nest or pass through this region, many of them come to Churchill to encounter the Beluga whales. The whales arrive into the Churchill River to make use of the warm, fresh water as well as feast on the Capelin who are spawning at this time of year. Although this is their main reason for being here, like us, they too have a curiosity for other, unusual creatures - humans. With  my engine off and drifting gently in the river current, the Belugas surround us seeming as though they are simply interested in 'checkin us out'. All of my photos are of whales underwater, literally floating near our boats, at times motionless. It is a touching experience, one that is difficult to describe using words. Enjoy the few images I have posted and I intend to post a few more if they turn out ok. Cheers

Here they come

Approaching our zodiac with curiosity

Who's watching who?

....and under they go

Juvenile, still grey coloured and will be until they reach the age of 4 years
