How delightful to be completely taken by surprise when a cold snap approached and caught us unprepared. Leading up to November the 15th, our days spent on the buggy were warm and toasty. The constant de-layering of thermal clothes when the windows were up and the furnace blazing was a common thread throughout our days on the Tundra. And then the chilly day came upon us and we did not dress appropriately. Many of us gathered around the propane stove which is situated towards the back of the buggy. I was up front searching for wildlife to show the folks who were with me. I wore my down jacket the entire day, including a warm woolly scarf and mits. Any crack that appeared when a window opened ever so slightly caused a blast of snow to enter into the buggy. The wind was coming directly off the Hudson Bay, born and bred from the High Arctic.
I am about to meet my final group. A gathering of 40 people mainly avid photographers. They have each signed up for the epic journey which takes us to Cape Churchill. 8 days will be spent on the buggy and 8 evenings and early mornings as we take up residents on the Tundra Buggy Lodge. The weather will only get colder but this hardy lot are so keen to capture the perfect image of the polar bear they don't mind the few discomforts.
We shall return to Churchill Nov 26th and spend our final evening dining at the Tundra Inn, the final meal that Dean will have to cook - his last
tour of duty.
We intend to stick in Churchill for a few days, wind down from a busy season and visit with some friends in a more relaxed state. Eventually our minds will turn to the journey back out west with Winnie, our abandoned 30ft home. We are so looking forward to hitting the road, taking our time and safely with very few mis-haps return to the west where the trees are green and the forest is luscious, even in the midst of the winter.
I hope to do an occasional update while out at cape Churchill, so keep your eyes peeled and enjoy the pics below of my previous group and trip to Churchill.
Thank You Debbie Simpkins and Marita Trinius for these lovely images you shared with our group.
